If your dentist has ever told you that you need a dental crown, you probably know the drill. Traditionally that meant that you needed to schedule at least two visits to the office, and be ready to wear a “temporary” crown while the real crown was made by an outside laboratory. Each visit required both the patient’s and dentist’s time, which was reflected in the total cost, along with the laboratory fees to have the crown fabricated. On the first visit, the tooth would be prepared, an impression of the tooth taken, and a temporary crown made from a type of plastic material would be created and placed. When the laboratory finished the crown, a second visit was required to remove the temporary crown, and properly place the permanent crown.

The top 4 reasons our patients have resisted getting crowns:

  • Requires at least 2 visits

  • Awkward, gooey impression materials

  • Extra costs

  • Wearing a temporary crown

If you hate getting crowns for any of these reasons, it’s time to celebrate: Now, with the introduction of computer-assisted design and computer-assisted manufacturing (CAD/CAM), we can provide SAME DAY crowns, done completely in-house!

CEREC is the short term for Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics, or CEramic REConstruction. CEREC uses CAD/CAM (computer aided design/computer aided manufacturing) technology to take “impressions” quickly with a 3D camera scanner, and generate a digital 3D image of your tooth and crown with precise measurements. In other words, no more messy and uncomfortable impressions: the crown is created digitally instead!

Our in-house CEREC CAD/CAM machine allows us to not only save you time and money, but also to offer higher quality crowns than are possible from traditional impressions. One of the difficulties associated with laboratory-fabricated crowns is communicating to the laboratory technician at another location the exact specifications of the crown. This presents a challenge to both the dentist and the technician, especially considering that each patient and crown is unique, with many small and specific requirements and adjustments. CEREC eliminates entirely the potential errors associated with miscommunication, and gives the dentist complete control over the appearance and fit of the crown.

By consolidating all of this into one visit and eliminating the need for impressions and temporary crowns, patients spend less time in the dentist chair, save money, and leave with a well-fitted and precisely placed crown in a single visit. In addition, CEREC crowns are durable, can last for 10-15 years, and are appealing esthetically.
