Your smile is one of the first things people notice when they meet you, but recent studies show that many people don’t feel comfortable showing their smile. In a 2012 study commissioned by the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO), researchers found that more than one-third of American adults are unhappy with their smile. Of those, 36 percent believe they would have a better social life if they had better teeth, and 22 percent of Americans who are unhappy with their smile think that better teeth would lead to a better love life.

The same thing is true in the UK, where a 2015 study revealed that 81% are worried about how their teeth look in photographs, and 28% of people refuse to smile in pictures because they’re concerned their teeth will look bad in photos or on social media.

Of course, we can blame part of our smile insecurities on peer pressure in our culture. Other interesting statistics revealed in the two studies were:

  • 77% of women think crooked teeth are worse than a receding hairline in a potential love interest
  • 78% of Americans perceive adults with crooked teeth to be unsuccessful
  • 14% of those unhappy with their teeth felt that they might be missing out on a better job
  • 15% of respondents believe that better teeth will help boost their popularity at work
  • 53% feel pressure to have great teeth to measure up to the smiles of celebrities
  • 48% of Americans ages 18-24 have untagged a picture of themselves on Facebook because they didn’t like their smile

Despite this pressure, many problems with dental esthetics stem from decay or gum disease. And yet, the British study also revealed some disturbing trends in personal care. Nearly half of those responding to the survey admitted they don’t know the proper way to brush and floss their teeth, nearly 30% don’t use toothpaste, 68% don’t use floss, and almost 10% share a toothbrush with someone else.

So the obvious place to start on the path to a more pleasing smile is to build habits to create a HEALTHIER smile; habits like brushing twice each day for two minutes,  flossing daily, and getting regular checkups.
