Summer is here, and school’s OUT! It’s time for vacations, bike rides, swimming holes, and summer adventures… so it’s easy to put off the back to school checklist. However, summer is the perfect time to get your child’s dental checkup done. And doing so may help your child perform better in school all year long.

Dental-related pain affects children’s attendance and grade point average more than any other illness. Children will be three times more likely to miss school due to dental pain, and four times more likely to have a lower grade point average, according to a study on the Impact of Poor Oral Health on Children’s School Attendance and Performance. Dental decay is the most common chronic disease in children, more common than asthma, diabetes, or obesity, and one in five children in elementary school have at least one untreated cavity.

Chronic illness such as dental caries can interfere with a child’s ability to succeed in school. Children with poorer oral health status are more likely to experience dental pain, miss school, and perform poorly in school. The findings of this study suggest that improving children’s oral health status may be a vehicle to enhancing their educational experience.*  Getting a jump on the school year by scheduling their checkup during their summer break ensures they will have a better chance of avoiding missed school days due to oral health issues.
